Bringing a baby into the world is a life-changing experience filled with joy, love, and countless firsts. One of those firsts is capturing your baby’s earliest days with professional newborn photography. But here’s the secret to making those dreamy photos happen: you need to schedule your session while you’re still pregnant!
Booking your session in advance not only guarantees a spot on my calendar but also ensures you can relax and enjoy this special time without scrambling to find an available photographer after your baby arrives. In this post, I’ll explain why scheduling early is crucial, how we handle flexible dates, and why this investment is so meaningful.
Why Booking Early Is So Important

The best time for newborn photos is when your baby is between 5 and 14 days old. During this window, babies are still very sleepy, which allows us to gently pose them in those iconic, heartwarming positions. Once they hit the two-week mark, they start becoming more alert, which can make posing and achieving those classic newborn looks a bit trickier.
Here’s what happens when you wait too long:
Many photographers, myself included, book up months in advance, especially during busy seasons.
You risk missing out on the opportunity to work with a photographer whose style you love.
You may feel added stress trying to coordinate a session while adjusting to life with a newborn.
But What If Baby Comes Early or Late?
Babies aren’t known for sticking to schedules, and that’s okay! When you book your session during pregnancy, I’ll add your due date to my calendar as a placeholder. If your baby arrives earlier or later than expected, we’ll simply adjust the session date accordingly. My goal is to make this process stress-free for you.
For example, if your baby arrives a week early, I’ll shift your session date to make sure we’re still in that ideal newborn photography window. You won’t have to worry about losing your spot or missing out on these priceless memories.

Why You Shouldn’t Wait Until Baby Arrives
One of the most common questions I hear is, “Can I book my session after the baby is born?” While it’s technically possible, here’s why it’s not the best idea:
My Calendar Fills Fast I only take a limited number of newborn clients each month to ensure every family gets the time and attention they deserve. By waiting, you run the risk of my schedule being completely booked.
Reduce Stress After your baby is born, you’ll be adjusting to a new routine. The last thing you want is to be searching for photographers and juggling dates when you could already have your session planned and ready to go.
Secure a Photographer You Love When you book early, you get first dibs on my calendar and my expertise. You’ll have plenty of time to discuss your vision, choose your favorite props, and prepare for the session.
